Dancers in Their Dressing Room
Original Etching by Jean-Louis
Forain

Original etching in black ink on simulated Japon paper by Jean-Louis Forain. Titled Danseuses Dans Leur Loge (Dancers in Their Dressing Room), the image shows two dancers preparing for a performance. Signed in the plate upper left image. From the 1912 M. G. Pellet printing of 25 impressions. (There was also an early printing of a smaller number of impressions, and a 1948 printing of 200 impressions on white wove paper.)

Jean-Louis Forain was considered one of the most important artists in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His friend Degas got him interested in the Paris ballet and its dancers and patrons as subjects for his art. This work show Forain's affinity with Degas' interest in dancers captured in everyday activities. It is an excellent example of Forain's earlier Impressionistic works.
