This Piece Has Been Sold Moulin Rouge - La Goulue Color Lithograph Color
lithograph on wove paper after Toulouse-Lautrec. From the 1896 Affiches Illustrees version of Lautrec's most famous poster.
A fine example in red, yellow, blue, and black.
This is Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous poster image. Transcribed in 1896 from Lautrec's 1891 full size, tall poster designed to publicize the famous Moulin Rouge
in Montmartre, a poplular place for music, shows, and dancing. The original poster charted a bold new direction in posters
and was very popular in Paris. In this scene, the popular dancer La Goulue (the glutton) performs the can-can with her
limber partner Valentin Le Desosse (the boneless). This image was published in the monthly series Les Affiches
Illustrees, a collection of small format poster images for collectors. This series was published in 1896 by Imprimerie
Chaix and printed by Imprimerie Eugene Verneau in Paris. Edition Size is 1,025. Many of these have not survived
in good condition; many have not survived at all. Even though this is a lifetime impression, since artisans at Imprimirie
Chaix did the transcribing of the large poster onto a smaller stone, this is technically an "after" Lautrec.
